Discovery at Cranberry Bog
The residents of Cranberry, Pennsylvania, are discovering that Native Americans preceded them there by 3,000 years. Recent excavations conducted by an archaeological consultant in anticipation of construction of the new Graham Park have uncovered the remains of a settlement that saw significant hunting, foraging and trading. Some of the implements were made from materials imported from 150 miles away, drawing archaeologists to suggest that the ancient inhabitants were related, in some fashion, to the Hopewell (moundbuilder) culture further to the west. At that ancient time, Cranberry was largely characterized as a bog. It was drained and converted to dry land in the 19th century as new settlement proceeded.
